Best Hiking Shoes for Wide Feet 2026

Jory, hikingfeet.com

I know the best hiking shoes for wide feet from personal experience. I not only hike 1,000+ miles each year testing hiking shoes—but also have wide feet. So I know which hiking shoes pinch the outsides of my feet and which ones have more width in the forefoot and toe box. My expert list of the best hiking shoes for wide feet includes best sellers from KEEN, Oboz, Salomon, Altra, Merrell, and Danner.

Best Hiking Shoes for Wide Feet

In 2026, the best hiking shoes for wide feet are the Oboz Katabatic LT (wides available), KEEN Targhee IV, Altra Olympus 6 Hike, Merrell Moab, and Danner Trail 2650 (wides available).

OBOZ KATABATIC LT

Best Lightweight Hiking Shoes for Wide Feet

Main Benefits:

  • Lightweight
  • Insoles improve breathability
  • GORE-TEX Invisible Fit waterproofing
  • Tread for mixed terrain
  • Available in wides (regular size is NOT wide)

If you buy them in wide, the Oboz Katabatic LT hiking shoes are a good fit for wide feet. The LT ("light") version of the Katabatic is made for light hiking—easier hikes on well-maintained trails. But I also pulled them off on an 11-mile day hike through Colorado's Maroon Bells. Its GORE-TEX Invisible Fit is also a lighter, more breathable waterproofing that takes up less space than the typical GORE-TEX bootie. If you prefer a lightweight hiking shoe that's available in a true wide, the Katabatic LT is a good choice for day hikers who don't push it too hard.

KEEN TARGHEE IV

Traditional Hiking Shoes with Wide Toe Box

Main Benefits:

  • comfort
  • wide toe box
  • protective leather and toe cap
  • regular size runs wide
  • wide sizes also available

The KEEN Targhee's wide fit and wide toe box make it one of the best hiking shoes for wide feet. It's a comfortable hiking shoe with plenty of cushioning,  solid support, and good traction on most trails. Hardcore hikers may want a stiffer, more durable hiking shoe. However, KEEN has the widest fit among hiking shoes, and this is their best seller. KEEN's regular size is wide enough for my wide feet, and their wide size adds extra width for hikers with really wide feet. I recommend the Targhee as a good, all-around hiking shoe for the average hiker—and probably the best fit for hikers with wide feet.

OBOZ Sawtooth X - Wide

Hiking Shoe Available in Wide

Main Benefits:

  • sturdy soles for support
  • upmarket insoles up the comfort
  • durability
  • available in wide

Oboz's standard size doesn't run wide, but it offers its best sellers—including the Sawtooth X—in a true wide. Like the KEEN Targhee IV (above), the Oboz Sawtooth is a traditional hiking shoe with supportive soles and protective leather uppers. It also adds Oboz's premium O-Fit insoles, which adds comfort and foot support where most brands skimp. These aren't the lightest shoes out there. But the Oboz Sawtooth X in Wide is one of the best all-around hiking shoes for hikers with wide feet. I've personally hiked almost 2000 miles in Sawtooths over the years, and their wide versions fit me (while the standard Sawtooths squeeze me).

ALTRA OLYMPUS 6 HIKE

Zero drop Hiking Shoe for Wide Feet

Main Benefits:

  • Footshape fit has a wide toe box
  • max cushion
  • GORE-TEX weather protection
  • Vibram outsoles
  • Altra's one true hiking shoe

Altra's first hiking shoe features the brand's signature combination of balanced cushioning/zero drop, gender-specific fits, and Footshape fit—a wide fit with a wide toe box. Newly updated for 2025, the Olympus 6 HIKE features a stiffer, sturdier build than the Altra Lone Peak trail running shoe, waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX, and Vibram outsoles for premium traction on both dry and wet trails. On top of those hike-friendly features, the Olympus 6 HIke also features max cushion, which adds comfort and makes Altra's zero drop less severe. Altra may have the widest fit on the market, and the Olympus 6 Hike is its signature hiking shoe.

Merrell Moab

Best Beginner Hiking Shoe for Wide Feet

Main Benefits:

  • one of the widest fits on the market
  • Hybrid hiking/casual is popular with beginners
  • Vibram outsoles
  • wide fit + wide sizes available

Due to its recent price increases, the uber-popular Merrell Moab no longer qualifies as a budget buy, but it's one of the best fits for hikers with wide feet. The Moab feels like a cross between a casual sneaker and a classic hiking shoe—which makes it popular with beginners. This isn't the most support or most durable hiking shoes, and you won't confuse Merrell's proprietary waterproofing with GORE-TEX. But its roomy fit (inspired by cowboy boots) provides extra room for those of us who need it. I normally need wide sizes, but Merrell's regular size is wide enough for me. It's also available in wides for hikers with extra-wide feet.

Danner Trail 2650

Lightweight Hiking Shoe for Wide Feet

Main Benefits:

  • lightweight soles cut weight
  • Vibram rubber for durable tred
  • Optional GORE-TEX waterproofing
  • wide sizes available

The Danner Trail 2650 is one of the best lightweight hiking shoes for wide feet. The shoe's lightweight construction trims some of the weight and support of traditional hiking shoes while offering men and women premium GORE-TEX waterproofing (optional) and Vibram outsoles for premium traction on wet and dry trails. (Learn more in my Trail 2650 review.) I personally wear the Trail 2650 in wide as a trail-to-town shoe. I can vouch that Danner's 'wide' is a true wide." This light-duty trail shoe is available in several styles—the GORE-TEX (waterproof) style is available in wide:

Best Trail Running Shoes for Hikers with Wide Feet

ALTRA LONE PEAK 9

Wide 'Footshape Fit'

Main Benefits:

  • Footshape fit with extra-wide toe boxes
  • zero drop encourages a natural stride
  • lightweight mesh dries quickly
  • wide fit + available in wide sizes

The Altra Lone Peak (reviewed here) is probably the most popular trail running shoe for hikers. It’s a moderately cushioned trail shoe with grippy outsoles and lightweight mesh that’s cooler on the feet and quicker to dry than many trail shoes. Many hikers swoon over Altra’s zero drop platform and footshaped toe boxes. Those roomy toe boxes allow toes to splay naturally, accommodating wide feet and swollen feet. Most hikers choose the non-waterproof version; however, the all-weather version (more expensive) is waterproof and more winter-appropriate. Lone Peaks are especially popular with thru-hikers and may be a good choice for hikers with wide feet who want to realize and develop their body's natural support mechanisms.

TOPO ATHLETIC TRAVERSE

Wide Toe Box

Main Benefits:

  • Low drop and wide toe box for a natural fit
  • lightweight mesh for weight savings
  • soft but responsive cushioning
  • engineered to dry quickly

One of the best fits for my wide feet, the Traverse is a trail running shoe that Topo Athletic made especially for hikers. The Topo Fit is similar to Altra's, but with low drop (insead of zero drop), a more secure fit in the midfoot (for less slip on steep terrain), and a wide toe box. (See my Traverse review.) The midsoles provide moderate cushioning, and the synthetic uppers are made to drain and dry quickly. For me, the traction is a big plus, too, with versatile Vibram outsoles. I'm a fan of the Topo Fit and regularly hike in my Trailventures in New Mexico's Sandia Mountains. The Topo Athletic Traverse may be a good trail running shoe for fast hikers with wide feet and light packs.

HOKA SPEEDGOAT 7 - Wide

Max Cushion Trail Shoe Available in Wide

Main Benefits:

  • Supersized midsoles for extra cushioning
  • lightweight
  • Vibram Megagrip for wet and dry traction
  • available in wide sizes

The Hoka Speedgoat is the best selling trail shoe in the U.S. right now. The thick layer of foam softens every step on the trail while the Vibram Megagrip outsoles give plenty of grip on mixed surfaces. New in 2026, the Speedgoat  7 has upgrade to supercritical foam and more aggressive Vibram outsoles for plus traction. Available in wide sizes, the Speedgoat is a popular choice for thru-hikers (PCT, AT) or day hikers who want as much cushioning as possible. I have wide feet and am currently on my fourth pair of HOKA Speedgoats.
