Your feet can feel pretty miserable if you wear hiking shoes that aren't wide enough. I know that from first-hand experience. It took me a few years of pinched feet and squashed toes before I realized I needed wider hiking shoes. Now that I've worn most of the best hiking shoes and managed footwear at an outdoor gear shop, I know which hiking shoes have worked (and have not worked) for me—and which ones tend to work best for my wide-footed customers. Based on my personal experience and professional experience, the best hiking shoes for wide feet are the

best hiking shoes for wide feet
KEEN Targhee
Wide Fit + Wide Toe Box
Main Benefits:
The Targhee's wide fit and wide toe box make it one of the best hiking shoes for wide feet. It's a comfortable hiking shoe with plenty of cushioning, solid support, and good traction on most trails. Hardcore hikers may want a stiffer, more durable hiking shoe. However, KEEN has the widest fit among hiking shoes, and this is their best seller. I recommend the Targhee as a good, all-around hiking shoe for the average hiker—and probably the best fit for hikers with wide feet.
"KEEN's regular size is wide enough for my wide feet, and their wide size adds extra width for hikers with really wide feet."

Oboz Sawtooth X - Wide
Available in Wide
Main Benefits:
The best-selling Sawtooth X (see my full review) is one of the rare hiking shoes that's comfortable enough to wear all day yet sturdy enough for moderate to difficult hikes. Oboz boasts all day comfort, thanks to its upmarket insoles, which offer extra cushioning and foot support. Their wide size runs snug in the heel with added width in the forefoot (where people need the extra room). These aren't the lightest shoes out there. However, if you're looking for comfort, support, value, and outstanding durability, snag a pair of Sawtooths in wide.
"I have 2,000 miles of first-hand experience with the Sawtooth family. Oboz's standard size squeezes my wide feet, but their wides work for me."

Salomon X Ultra 4 - Wide
Available in Wide
Main Benefits:
Thankfully, Salomon started offering their best sellers in wides, so I've been able to hike extensively in the X Ultra 4 (see my full review). This shoe stands out for providing above average support at a below average weight. Plus, it adds aggressive traction and optional GORE-TEX waterproofing for premium performance. Salomon's regular size is snug in the heel and tapered in the toes, but they offer this best seller in wide—which should accommodate most (but not all) hikers with wide feet. The X Ultra 4 is arguably the best hiking shoe on the market and thankfully available in a wide for hikers like me.
"My personal hiking experience includes thousands of miles in Salomon X Ultras. Salomon's wide isn't as wide as some brands', but the X Ultra 4 Wide gives me just enough width in the forefoot and toe box to hike comfortably."

Altra Olympus 5 Hike
Zero drop Hiking Shoe for Wide Feet
Main Benefits:
Many hikers love Altra, even though the brand has never made a true hiking shoe—until releasing the Olympus 5 Hike GTX in 2022. Altra's first hiking shoe features the brand's signature combination of balanced cushioning/zero drop, gender-specific fits, and wide toe boxes—a good fit for hikers with wide feet. (Learn more in my Olympus 5 Hike review.) But the Olympus 5 also features a stiffer, sturdier build than the Altra Lone Peak trail running shoe, waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX, and Vibram outsoles for premium traction on both dry and wet trails. On top of those hike-friendly features, the Olympus 5 HIke also features max cushion, which adds comfort and makes Altra's zero drop less severe. That makes this Altra one of the best hiking shoes for wide feet.
"I purchased, tested, and reviewed the Altra Olympus 5 Hike when it first came out. Altra's standard fit is wider than many brands' wide sizes—this shoe fits me well in my normal hiking size (1/2-size bigger than my everyday size)."

Merrell Moab
Best Budget Hiking Shoe for Wide Feet
Main Benefits:
The Merrell Moab is a budget-oriented hiking shoe that's popular with beginners and casual hikers (see my review). Part of its popularity is due to its price point, but Merrell's wide fit is another factor. The Moab feels like a cross between a casual sneaker and a classic hiking shoe, and its roomy fit provides extra room for those of us who need it. Merrell is more of a budget brand than premium brand. However, the Moab has legions of fans who couldn't imagine buying any other hiking shoes. As for fit, Merrell's regular size runs wide, and it also offers the best-selling Moab in wide sizes for even more room for wide feet.
"I've personally owned the Moab and reviewed it on Hiking Feet. Merrells run wide enough that their regular size fits me better than their wide size."

Danner Trail 2650
Lightweight Hiking Shoe for Wide Feet
Main Benefits:
The Danner Trail 2650 is one of the best lightweight hiking shoes for wide feet. The shoe's lightweight construction trims some of the weight and support of traditional hiking shoes while offering men and women premium GORE-TEX waterproofing (optional) and Vibram outsoles for premium traction on wet and dry trails. (Learn more in my Trail 2650 review.) Danner's regular size is not wide, but they offer the Trail 2650 in a true wide. This light-duty trail shoe is available in several styles—the GORE-TEX (waterproof) style is available in wide:
"I personally wear the Trail 2650 in wide as a trail-to-town shoe. I can vouch that Danner's 'wide' is a true wide."

Altra Lone Peak
Wide 'Footshape Fit'
Main Benefits:
The Altra Lone Peak (reviewed here) is probably the most popular trail running shoe for hikers. It’s a moderately cushioned trail shoe with grippy outsoles and lightweight mesh that’s cooler on the feet and quicker to dry than many trail shoes. Many hikers swoon over Altra’s zero drop platform and footshaped toe boxes. Those roomy toe boxes allow toes to splay naturally, accommodating wide feet and swollen feet. Most hikers choose the non-waterproof version; however, the all-weather version (more expensive) is waterproof and more winter-appropriate. Lone Peaks are especially popular with thru-hikers and may be a good choice for hikers with wide feet who want to realize and develop their body's natural support mechanisms.
"I've tested and reviewed the popular Lone Peak. Zero drop doesn't work for my lower body, but Altra's fit works well for hikers with wide feet.

Topo Athletic Traverse
Wide Toe Box
Main Benefits:
One of the best new trail running shoes for 2024, the Traverse is a trail running shoe that Topo Athletic made especially for hikers. The Topo Fit is similar to Altra's, but with low drop (insead of zero drop), a more secure fit in the midfoot (for less slip on steep terrain), and a wide toe box. (See my Traverse review.) The midsoles provide moderate cushioning, and the synthetic uppers are made to drain and dry quickly. For me, the traction is a big plus, too, with versatile Vibram outsoles. The Topo Athletic Traverse may be a good trail running shoe for wide-footed thru-hikers and fast hikers with light packs.
"I'm a fan of the Topo Fit and regularly hike in my Trailventures in New Mexico's Sandia Mountains.

Hoka Speedgoat - Wide
Max Cushion Trail Shoe Available in Wide
Main Benefits:
The Hoka Speedgoat is the best selling trail shoe in the U.S. right now. The thick layer of foam softens every step on the trail while the Vibram Megagrip outsoles give plenty of grip on mixed surfaces. The new Speedgoat 6 has firmed up Hoka's famous midsoles better durability and offers this best seller in wide sizes. It's a popular choice for thru-hikers (PCT, AT) or day hikers who want as much cushioning as possible. I have wide feet and am currently on my third pair of HOKA Speedgoats.
"I've been testing the new HOKA Speedgoat 6 over the past two months. I'm still a fan, but the snugger uppers don't seem quite as wide as previous versions."

Brooks Cascadia
Roomy Fit for Wide Feet
Main Benefits:
More supportive than the trail runners above, the Brooks Cascadia is the sturdiest trail running shoe for hikers with wide feet. This traditional trail runner is relatively stiff (for support) with firm cushioning to protect feet from the wear and tear of the trail. I like the aggressive lugs for steep ascents and ascents and trust the shoe's sturdier build to protect my feet similarly to a hiking shoe. Even though it's not available in wide, Brooks' regular size should accommodate many hikers with wide feet.
"The Cascadia has been around forever, but I finally tried it in 2023. Brooks' regular fit works pretty well for my wide feet."
