The KEEN Targhee's wide fit and wide toe box make it one of the best hiking shoes for wide feet. It's a comfortable hiking shoe with plenty of cushioning, solid support, and good traction on most trails. Hardcore hikers may want a stiffer, more durable hiking shoe. However, KEEN has the widest fit among hiking shoes, and this is their best seller. KEEN's regular size is wide enough for my wide feet, and their wide size adds extra width for hikers with really wide feet. I recommend the Targhee as a good, all-around hiking shoe for the average hiker—and probably the best fit for hikers with wide feet.

Oboz's standard size doesn't run wide, but it offers its best sellers—including the Sawtooth X—in a true wide. Like the KEEN Targhee IV (above), the Oboz Sawtooth is a traditional hiking shoe with supportive soles and protective leather uppers. It also adds Oboz's premium O-Fit insoles, which adds comfort and foot support where most brands skimp. These aren't the lightest shoes out there. But the Oboz Sawtooth X in Wide is one of the best all-around hiking shoes for hikers with wide feet. I've personally hiked almost 2000 miles in Sawtooths over the years, and their wide versions fit me (while the standard Sawtooths squeeze me).

This means I've been able to hike extensively in the X Ultra 5 (wide)—which is arguably the best hiking shoe on the market. Updated in 2025, this versatile hiking shoe stands out for providing above average support at a below average weight. Plus, it adds aggressive traction and optional GORE-TEX waterproofing for premium performance. Importantly, Salomon's wide is NOT as wide as some brands' wides, but it should be wide enough width in the forefoot and toe box for many hikers with wide feet. (If in doubt, size up a full size from your everyday shoe size.)

Due to its recent price increases, the uber-popular Merrell Moab no longer qualifies as a budget buy, but it's one of the best fits for hikers with wide feet. The Moab feels like a cross between a casual sneaker and a classic hiking shoe—which makes it popular with beginners. This isn't the most support or most durable hiking shoes, and you won't confuse Merrell's proprietary waterproofing with GORE-TEX. But its roomy fit (inspired by cowboy boots) provides extra room for those of us who need it. I normally need wide sizes, but Merrell's regular size is wide enough for me. It's also available in wides for hikers with extra-wide feet.

It’s a moderately cushioned trail shoe with grippy outsoles and lightweight mesh that’s cooler on the feet and quicker to dry than many trail shoes. Many hikers swoon over Altra’s zero drop platform and footshaped toe boxes. Those roomy toe boxes allow toes to splay naturally, accommodating wide feet and swollen feet. Most hikers choose the non-waterproof version; however, the all-weather version (more expensive) is waterproof and more winter-appropriate. Lone Peaks are especially popular with thru-hikers and may be a good choice for hikers with wide feet who want to realize and develop their body's natural support mechanisms.

One of the best fits for my wide feet, the Traverse is a trail running shoe that Topo Athletic made especially for hikers. The Topo Fit is similar to Altra's, but with low drop (insead of zero drop), a more secure fit in the midfoot (for less slip on steep terrain), and a wide toe box. (See my Traverse review.) The midsoles provide moderate cushioning, and the synthetic uppers are made to drain and dry quickly. For me, the traction is a big plus, too, with versatile Vibram outsoles. I'm a fan of the Topo Fit and regularly hike in my Trailventures in New Mexico's Sandia Mountains. The Topo Athletic Traverse may be a good trail running shoe for fast hikers with wide feet and light packs.

Roomy Fit for Wide Feet

More supportive than the trail runners above, the Brooks Cascadia is the sturdiest trail running shoe for hikers with wide feet. This traditional trail runner is relatively stiff (for support) with firm cushioning to protect feet from the wear and tear of the trail. I like the aggressive lugs for steep ascents and ascents and trust the shoe's sturdier build to protect my feet similarly to a hiking shoe. Even though it's not available in wide, Brooks' regular size should accommodate many hikers with wide feet.
