Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge Review

Jory, hikingfeet.com
The Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge is engineered for a new generation of hikers who prefer more approachable hiking shoes with less stodgy colorways than olive green, dark gray, and black. There's a lot hidden in its name. The "X Ultra" is Salomon's high-performance hiking shoe—known for balancing stabilty and agility. In Salomon's naming system, "360" means "all around" use (i.e. 360° = round). "Edge" refers to edgier colorways and more fashion-forward styling for everyday wear. That's a confusing mix: Is this a performance hiking shoe or more of a casual outdoor shoe?

To find out, I picked up a pair and personally tested it on easy to difficult trails near my Albuquerque home. My Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge review covers this shoe's support, weight, fit, comfort, traction, weather protection, and overall value.

Testing the Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge

Since the Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge seemingly mixes a performance hiking shoe with more all-around and fashion-forward uses, my test hikes included a mix of easy, multi-purpose trails and moderate to difficult trails with mixed terrain and steep ups and downs. I also tested these shoes next to their Salomon siblings—the X Ultra 5 GTX (the flagship model) and X Ultra 360 (no "Edge")—to compare their fits, features, and recommended uses.

As always, Hiking Feet's reviews are 100% independent and based on my first-hand hiking experience and my professional experience in the outdoor gear industry—including my time managing footwear at Appalachian Outdoors.

Testing the Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge's support, comfort, and traction

SUPPORT

True to its name, the Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge has retained much of the stability and agility that marks the entire X Ultra line. Like the X Ultra 5, the X Ultra 360 Edge has Salomon's  advanced CHASSIS, a U-shaped thermoplastic plate which increases side-to-side support while still allowing your feet to flex naturally. That means it's a moderately stiff shoe with more ankle support than most trail-to-town shoes that target new hikers. It's slightly less beefy than the X Ultra 5.

My feet and ankles require more support than many hikers', and I didn't roll an ankle on my test hikes. Salomon recommends the Edge for the occasional day hiker who wants a relatively supportive shoe. I agree.

The Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge weighs less than 2 lbs/ pair

WEIGHT

My pair of the Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge hiking shoes weighs 1lb 15 oz. That's lighter than average for hiking shoes in my size (men's size 12.5) and a fraction of an ounce heavier than the flagship X Ultra 5. If you prefer a lighter hiking shoe, this one has an excellent weight-to-support ratio.

The Salomon features firm soles that flex around your toe joints

COMFORT

Made for more all-around wear, the X Ultra 360 Edge shows some subtle but positive comfort tweaks compare to other Salomons. There's more padding around the tongue and ankle collar to soften up the shoe's feel. I can't be 100% sure (since I own the X Ultra 5 in a different size), but there seems to be slightly more toe room in the Edge, too.

At the same time, this shoe has moderate cushion and moderate stiffness (for better foot support and ankle stability). In my experience, some beginner hikers find this feel too firm.

I've always appreciated how Salomon's fit increases its comfort. The design of the uppers and laces cradles the foot better than most brands. Plus, the snug fit in the heel keeps your feet from slipping around (compared to a Merrell or KEEN, for example). The trick is making sure there's enough width in the toe box and forefoot for your feet.

Salomons fit snug in the heel with a more standed fit in the forefoot

FIT

The Salomon X Ultra 360 has a standard fit. Unlike the more popular X Ultra 5, it's only available in one width (not a wide). Most men and women should size up a 1/2 size from their everyday shoe size for the best hiking fit.

Since I have moderately wide feet, I sized up a full size from my everyday shoe size to get enough width in the forefoot. Thankfully, that worked. Surprisingly, the regular-width X Ultra 360 in a 12.5 was wider than the wide version of the X Ultra 5 in size 12. This suggests the "all around" version of the X Ultra has a more relaxed fit than some Salomons (a brand which normally runs tighter in the toes). Thanks to Salomon's snug heel cup and Sensigrip uppers that cradle your feet, you can size up in the 360 Edge without your feet slipping forward.

Choose the X Ultra 360 GTX for GORE-TEX waterproofing

WEATHER PROTECTION

I chose the non-waterproof Edge since I mostly hike in semi-arid New Mexico. Obviously,

that equals very little weather protection. But the non-waterproof X Ultra is more breathable and wears cooler for high-exertion hikes in hot weather and for everyday wear.

However, Salomon makes a waterproof version of this shoe, the X Ultra 360 Edge GTX. "GTX" is the abbreviation for GORE-TEX, which remains the most reliable and breathable waterproofing on the market. You don't get a ton of weather protection in a low-cut shoe. In my experience, however, GORE-TEX outperforms other waterproof membranes, which is a plus.

The X Ultra 360 Edge has aggressive, v-shaped climbing and braking lugs

TRACTION

In a surprising twist, the X Ultra 360 Edge actually has more aggressive traction than the performance-oriented X Ultra 5. I've personally hiked more than 2,000 miles on this specific Salomon outsole. Its tread is solid on steep trails with dirt, gravel, and mud because it features angular lugs and a deep heel brake to dig into soft and loose sediments. But those aggressive climbing and breaking lugs are a little sketch on smooth rock, especially when wet.

When I tested these shoes on the Embudito trail, they crushed the steep, weathered granite gravel switchbacks. But I slipped on the granite boulders deep in the canyon that have been worn smooth by water over many millennia.

Overall, this shoe demonstrated excellent traction on mixed terrain. In my experience, these soles have decent durability if you only wear them on trail. However, Salomon's Contragrip rubber wears down much quicker on streets and sidewalks.

The X Ultra 360 Edge performs better on mixed trails than on rocks

VALUE

Starting at $135 ($20 more for GTX waterproofing), the Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge costs significantly less than the average hiking shoe. It also costs $25 less than the Salomon X Ultra 5 without a big drop in performance. Whether you like it as a true hiking shoe or a trail-to-town shoe, it's a strong value in today's market (especially with tariffs making many hiking shoes more expensive than last year).

SALOMON X ULTRA 360 Edge: PROS VS CONS

The Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge may be slightly more casual than other X Ultras, but its pros and cons are similar to other X Ultras I've tested and reviewed:

Pros:

  • Good lateral support
  • Smart balance between stability and agility
  • Lightweight
  • Not as firm or as narrow as older X Ultras
  • GORE-TEX is durably waterproof and breathable
  • Aggressive traction for steep trails with loose sediment
  • Great value

Cons:

  • Slightly less performance-oriented than other X Ultras
  • Aggressive lugs aren't good on smooth or wet rock
  • Not available in wide

SHOULD YOU BUY THE SALOMON X ULTRA 360 Edge?

The Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge's "all-around" build may be comfortable enough for less serious hikers, yet its foot support, GORE-TEX waterproofing, and aggressive traction let day hikers conquer moderate to difficult trails, too. It's the most casual version of the X Ultra line, so it's best version of the X Ultra for summit to sidewalk wear. With fresher colorways, the X Ultra 360 Edge also scores some fashion points as a "sportstyle" shoe for the city. There's not much of a fall off from the best-selling X Ultra 5 to the X Ultra 360—and it's $25 cheaper. For me, the X Ultra 360 and X Ultra 460 Edge represent the best values in hiking boots in 2025.

HOW DOES THE SALOMON X ULTRA 360 EDGE COMPARE WITH THE X ULTRA 5?

  • The Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge is made for all-around wear and the occasional hiker who wants stability and support. The X Ultra 5 is made for fast hikes on more technical terrain.
  • Both shoes share the same chassis for lateral support, but the flagship X Ultra 5 is a slightly sturdier shoe.
  • Salomon's 360 Edge variant has traditional synthetic uppers while the X Ultra 5 features new Matryx uppers for better breathability and durability.
  • Traction is similar, but the X Ultra 360 Edge has more aggressive lugs than the X Ultra 5, making it slightly better on steep trails with loose sediment and slightly less reliable on smooth rock.
  • Salomon offers the X Ultra 5 in wide. The X Ultra 360 Edge is only available in a standard width.
  • The Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge comes in more contemporary colorways to appeal to younger hikers and trail-to-town users.

Conclusion

If you're a newer hiker, value shopper, or occasional hiker who wants a stable yet versatile outdoor shoe, I recommend the Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge—if it fits your feet, of course.
