It's harder than it should be to find good hiking boots with a wide toe box. European brands generally run narrow in the toes, which eliminates many of the best brands for hiking boots. However, Altra, KEEN, and Topo Athletic are three US brands that make hiking boots with a wide toe box. I have wider feet and hike more than 1000 miles a year, so I've personally hiked in many hiking boots that pinched my feet—and a few with much-need room in the toes. From lightest to heaviest, the best hiking boots with a wide toe box are the Topo Athletic Trailventure 2, Altra Olympus 6 HIKE, KEEN Targhee IV, and KEEN Durand II.

TOPO ATHLETIC TRAILVENTURE 2
Best Lightweight Hiking Boot with a Wide Toe Box
Main Benefits:
While most lightweight hiking boots run narrow in the toes, the Topo Athletic Trailventure 2 is a lightweight hiking boot with a wide toe box. Made for fast hikers with light packs, it's light on your feet with cushy but responsive Zipfoam for comfort and light stability to add some foot support. The Trailventure 2 also features grippy Vibram outsoles for really good traction. I've personally owned three pairs of Trailventures—which fit my wider feet better than any other boot I've owned. Plus, the American Podiatric Medical Association has awarded Topo Athletic its Seal of Approval for promoting healthy feet. The Trailventure 2 is made for fast-packers. However, I typically wear mine for moderate to difficult day hikes for their fit and traction.

ALTRA OLYMPUS 6 HIKE GTX
Zero Drop Hiking Boot with a Wide Toe Box
Main Benefits:
Altra may be the king of wide toe boxes, but they didn't make a hiking boot until releasing the Olympus in late 2022. Updated for 2025, the new Olympus 6 Hike Mid GTX features the brand's trifecta of balanced cushioning (aka zero drop), gender-specific fits, and wide, Footshape toe boxes. Much sturdier than the Altra Lone Peak, Altra's Olympus 6 HIKE features maximum cushioning, leather uppers for added weather resistance and foot protection, waterproof-breathable GORE-TEX membranes for weather protection, and Vibram Megagrip outsoles for great grip on wet and dry surfaces. Altras typically hurt my calves, but the Olympus 6 HIKE's extra cushioning makes its zero drop from heel to toe less taxing on my lower body. Heavier and more cushioned than other Altras, the HIKE version of the Olympus gives zero drop fans a mid-cut with a wide toe box.

KEEN TARGHEE IV MID
Day Hiking Boot with a Wide Toe Box
Main Benefits:
KEEN's best-selling hiking boot, the Targhee IV is one of the best hiking boots with a wide toe box. Known for their out of the box comfort, Targhees score comfort points with their cushioned midsoles, soft leather uppers, and extra room in the toes. They're moderately supportive and should be enough boot for the average day hiker; however, you may want a sturdier, more durable hiking boot if you mostly hike harder trails, hike a ton of miles, or plan on doing much backpacking. This is the best, all-around hiking boot with a wide toe box for day hikers who want or need extra wiggle room for their toes.

KEEN DURAND II
Hiking & Backpacking Boot with Wide Toe Box
Main Benefits:
The sturdiest option on this list, the KEEN Durand II is a true, mid-weight hiking boot with a wide toe box. It features sturdier soles and a taller mid-cut than the best-selling Targhees (above) for better foot and ankle support. It's waterproof with soft leather uppers and plenty of cushioning underfoot for comfort, too. In contrast to the boots above, the Durand can also handle backpacking well. When I worked at Backcountry and Appalachian Outdoors, the KEEN Durand was my go-to recommendation for those who needed a more supportive hiking boot with a wider fit, especially in the toes.

Should you buy a hiking boot with a wide toe box?
I'm a big fan of wide toe boxes—and not just for hikers (like me) with wide feet. According to the podiatrist who trained me in hiking footwear, most of the foot injuries she treats stem from people wearing footwear that's too small or too narrow in the toes. Wide toe boxes allow toes to splay out naturally for better alignment and a stronger base for your body.
The options above are the best hiking boots with wide toe boxes. My recommendations are based on my hiking experience (16,000+ miles since 2011) and my experience as an outdoor industry professional. These are the four hiking boots with wide toe boxes that I've recommended the most to my customers at Backcountry and Appalachian Outdoors.
Have you found your match? If this post has helped you pick out your next pair, I'd appreciate it if you bought them through the affiliate links above. That doesn't cost you anything. However, the retailer may pay me a few dollars (and it is just a few dollars) if you click a link and make a qualifying purchase. That compensates me for the thousands of unpaid hours I've spent writing free content to help you pick the right hiking boots or hiking shoes for you.
If this site hooked you, I'd appreciate it if you hooked me up, too.! Thanks for doing me a solid.
