Best Hiking Boots with Wide Toe Box 2026

Jory, hikingfeet.com

It's harder than it should be to find good hiking boots with a wide toe box. Most of the best brands for hiking boots are from Europe, where toe boxes typically run narrow. But lucky for you, I have wide feet and hike more than 1000 miles each year testing hiking boots and shoes. So I've personally know which hiking boots have pinched my feet—and which ones offer more room in the forefoot and toes. From lightest to heaviest, the best hiking boots with a wide toe box are the Topo Athletic Trailventure 2, Altra Olympus 6 HIKE, KEEN Targhee IV, and KEEN Durand II.

TOPO ATHLETIC TRAILVENTURE 2

Best Lightweight Hiking Boot with a Wide Toe Box

Main Benefits:

  • Lightweight boot made for fast-packing
  • Wide toe box
  • Aggressive Traction
  • eVent waterproofing is highly breathable

The Topo Athletic Trailventure 2 is a lightweight hiking boot with a wide toe box. I've personally owned three pairs of Trailventures—my go-to day hiking boot—and wore them when I won top hiker at Backcountry's Summer Adventure Challenge. This "fastpacking boot" feels light on your feet with cushy but responsive Zipfoam for comfort and light stability to support your feet. The Trailventure 2 also features grippy Vibram outsoles for really good traction. As a bonus, the American Podiatric Medical Association has awarded Topo Athletic its Seal of Approval for promoting healthy feet. I recommend the Trailventure 2 for fast hikers and day hikers who want a light and agile hiking boot with a wide toe box.

ALTRA OLYMPUS 6 HIKE GTX

Zero Drop Hiking Boot with a Wide Toe Box

Main Benefits:

  • Altra's Footshape fit = wide toe box
  • 33mm stack height of cushioning
  • GORE-TEX waterproofing
  • Vibram Megagrip traction
  • Easier on the body than Altra trail runners

Updated in 2025, the Altra Olympus 6 Hike Mid GTX is much sturdier than the Altra Lone Peak and features the brand's balanced cushioning (aka zero drop), gender-specific fits, and wide, Footshape toe boxes. The Olympus offers hikers maximum cushioning, leather uppers for added weather resistance and foot protection, waterproof-breathable GORE-TEX membranes for weather protection, and Vibram Megagrip outsoles for great grip on wet and dry surfaces. Zero drop isn't for everybody. But the Altra Olympus 6 has the widest toe box of any hiking boot on this list.

KEEN TARGHEE IV MID

Day Hiking Boot with a Wide Toe Box

Main Benefits:

  • KEEN toe box is wider than average
  • Thick soles for comfort
  • Leather
  • Good fit for wide feet
  • Available in wides for even more width

KEEN's best-selling hiking boot, the Targhee IV is one of the best hiking boots with a wide toe box. Targhees score comfort points with their cushioned midsoles, soft leather uppers, and extra room in the toes. They're moderately supportive and should be enough boot for the average day hiker; however, you may want a sturdier, more durable hiking boot if you mostly hike harder trails, hike a ton of miles, or plan on doing much backpacking. Overall, the KEEN Targhee IV gets my vote as the best hiking boot with a wide toe box for the average day hiker.

KEEN DURAND II

Hiking & Backpacking Boot with Wide Toe Box

Main Benefits:

  • Mid-weight support with stability shank
  • Comfort
  • Wide Fit/Wide toe box
  • Made in the USA

The beefiest boot on this list, the KEEN Durand II is a true, mid-weight hiking boot with a wide toe box. It features sturdier soles and a taller mid-cut than the best-selling Targhees (above) for better foot and ankle support. It's waterproof with soft leather uppers and plenty of cushioning underfoot for comfort, too.  When I worked at Backcountry and Appalachian Outdoors, the KEEN Durand was my go-to recommendation for those who needed a more supportive hiking boot with a wider fit, especially in the toes.

LOWA RENEGADE EVO GTX

Best Backpacking Boot Available in Wide

Main Benefits:

  • Excellent ankle support
  • Tough enough for off-trail hikes and backpacking
  • GORE-TEX waterproofing
  • Durable and versatile Vibram outsoles
  • Available in wide sizes (size up one full size!)

None of the backpacking boots I've tested and reviewed has a wide toe box. But you may be able to get enough width in the toes by buying the LOWA Renegade EVO in wide AND sizing up one full size from your everyday shoe size. Updated in 2025, the Renegade EVO is the latest version of LOWA's long-time best seller. It offers excellent ankle support and stiffer soles to conquer tougher trails or carry more weight on your back. A best seller for 25 years, the Renegade is much more rugged and supportive than the hiking boots above. If you size up and buy it in wide, it gives you as much room in the toe box that you're going to find in a real backpacking boot.

Best Fit

available in narrow, regular, and wide sizes

Best Match

difficult day hikes, off-trail hikes, backpacking

Should you buy a hiking boot with a wide toe box?

I'm a big fan of wide toe boxes—and not just for hikers (like me) with wide feet. According to the podiatrist who trained me in hiking footwear, most of the foot injuries she treats stem from people wearing footwear that's too small or too narrow in the toes. Wide toe boxes allow toes to splay out naturally for better alignment and a stronger base for your body.

The options above are the best hiking boots with wide toe boxes that I've sold, tested, and reviewed. If one of them looks like it will work for you, please consider purchasing them through the buttons above. The retailer (e.g. REI, Backcountry) may share a few dollars of the sale with Hiking Feet—which keeps this site alive.

If this site hooked you up, I'd appreciate it if you hooked me up, too. Thanks for doing me a solid.
