I've personally tested and reviewed most of the adidas TERREX hiking shoes over the past four years, including the Free Hiker 2 (low and mid), Free Hiker SL, Skychaser, and Skychaser AX5. We had trouble selling adidas TERREX when I managed footwear at Appalachian Outdoors. But the brand is better than most people might realize. My adidas TERREX brand review highlights the brand's pros and cons and its best hiking shoes. That way, you can decide if adidas TERREX hiking shoes will fit your feet and your hiking style.

adidas TERREX Review
adidas TERREX is the outdoor branch of adidas footwear—Europe's largest athletic apparel and footwear brand. The brand is based in Germany and benefits from all of adidas's resources and technologies.
Is adidas TERREX a good brand? The answer depends on your feet and your hiking style.
Fit: Like most European brands, adidas TERREX hiking shoes run slightly narrow in the toes. In other words, it's not the best brand for hikers with wide feet.
Recommended Uses: Overall, adidas TERREX targets the modern hiker—those who prefer hiking shoes that don't look or feel like traditional hiking shoes. For better or worse, most TERREX shoes are made for both hiking and everyday wear. As I explain below, the TERREX Free Hiker series prioritizes comfort, and the Skychaser series prioritizes foot protection.
Why should you buy adidas TERREX hiking shoes?
The best reasons to buy adidas TERREX hiking shoes are the brand's aesthetics, comfort, and trail-to-town versatility.
Aesthetics
adidas TERREX is a good brand for hikers who don't like the look and feel of traditional hiking shoes. adidas' colorways slay and often sneak in fun accent colors for a more fashionable vibe. I mean, even its browns look sick?! I don't think it's an accident that TERREX shoes look good with denim and khakis (and hiking pants).
Comfort
The comfort of adidas TERREX hiking shoes also stands out, especially in the Free Hiker series. I'm a big fan of adidas's BOOST foam, which makes Free Hikers hyper-cushy.
Trail to Town Versatility
adidas TERREX hiking shoes straddle the line between hiking shoes and casual sneakers. Most models work for hiking, everyday wear, and travel to different degrees.
Pros & Cons of adidas TERREX
As with all brands, adidas TERREX footwear has its trade offs. Based on my 7 years of experience selling them and wearing them, here are the pros and cons of adidas TERREX for hikers:
These pros and cons generally hold true across the adidas TERREX line. At the same time, each adidas hiking shoe has a different recommended use. Here's how to choose the right adidas TERREX hiking shoe for YOU.
Which adidas TERREX hiking shoe should YOU buy?
For 2026, adidas has simplified its hiking shoe line up into two series: the Free Hikers and the Skychasers:
- The TERREX Free Hiker series emphasizes COMFORT—with more cushioning and less support than traditional hiking shoes. They're made for easier trails and more casual uses.
- The TERREX Skychaser series emphasizes PROTECTION—with stiffer soles, more protective uppers, and various overlays that armorize your hiking feet. They're made for harder trails.
If you're a more casual hiker or prioritize comfort over support and durability, focus on the Free Hiker series. If you're a more serious hiker hitting mountainous trails, focus on the Skychaser series for more support and protection. For more buying tips, see my guide to choosing adidas TERREX shoes.
Best adidas TERREX Hiking Shoes
ADIDAS TERREX FREE HIKER 2
Best adidas Hiking Shoe for Easier Trails
Main Benefits:
Available in a low-cut (see my review) and mid-cut (see my review), the adidas TERREX Free Hiker 2 is one of the most comfortable hiking shoes on the market. BOOST foam (from adidas running shoes) makes the Free Hiker extra-cushy, and it also boasts an EVA stability frame for added foot and ankle support. This shoe isn't made for the toughest trails. But if you mostly hike well-maintained trails or wear your hiking shoes from the summit to the sidewalk, it's hard to beat the comfort of the TERREX Free Hiker 2. I've worn mine for easy riverside trails, city walking, and travel, including an Irish holiday where these shoes crushed 10-mile days in the city and easier hikes in national parks.

ADIDAS TERREX SKYCHASER AX5
Best Budget adidas Hiking Shoe
Main Benefits:
Replacing the TERREX AX4 in 2026, the Skychaser AX5 is an entry-level TERREX hiking shoe for budget-oriented hikers. Most budget hiking shoes suck in the support department, but the Skychaser AX5 is stiffer than expected, adding foot and ankle support. Plus, it's available in waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX, which is better waterproofing than you typically get at this price. Performance-wise, there's not a big difference between the regular Skychaser and cheaper Skychaser AX5. After testing this shoe in 2026, I put in near the top of my curated list of the best hiking shoes on a budget.

ADIDAS TERREX FREE HIKER SL
Best Lightweight adidas TERREX Hiking Shoe
Main Benefits:
New for 2026, the TERREX Free Hiker SL is my favorite adidas hiking shoe that I've tested and reviewed. The Free Hiker SL is much lighter than the regular Free Hiker, making it a good match for fast-moving fitness hikes and more athletic hikers who move quickly over mixed terrain. The "SL" stands for speed lace—which makes it easy to slip this shoe on and off. Plus, this shoe retains much of the cushion of its namesake and GORE-TEX waterproofing for added weather protection.
